commonvision’s Physical Distanzine

A lot has changed since we left campus in March of 2020. We wanted to create a platform and outlet for work themed and/or created during this time. Thank you to all who submitted. We hope to have print copies available when we return to campus.

Ringtone by Karis Barnett, Poem

How can I capture your telephone-lined words in a glass jar like fireflies?

Your screen glow lights up my room and defeats all my monsters at night

How can I bask in the lilt of your FaceTimed voice like rays of sunlight?

You tell me your dreams and your worries with such precision that when you shine my way, my sundial creates the perfect shadow of time

Yet clocks disappear when I’m with you because I never tire of your connected presence

I’m wringing my hands as I watch the sand in my nearby hourglass because I don’t want my conversations with you to end

Who needs cloud nine when you’re a cloud ten?

I’m floating on your epiphanies, your musings, but I haven’t lost control

I’ve found my paintbrush but I could never fit all of your introspection into one portrait

Your thought stream is like a tangled ball of yarn and I’m a cat with a furrowed brow, determined to unravel your philosophies

I’m a bright-eyed student in your school of thought

Yet I’ve been forming creases in my eyelids as I study you

My eyelashes build a cage around you but you’re not my prisoner

I love hearing your mind fly freer than a meteorite breaking an ocean of stars

And I long to be in your galaxy

So I’m upgrading to the best phone service to never lose reception with you

Your imperfections are shimmering shards of seashells I collect on a lonely shore

I arrange them in the shape of your strength, hoping you don’t notice I’ve secretly drawn “Please stay on the line with me” in the sand

Sandcastles aren’t as fun to build when there’s no one to talk to

But this queen is used to being quarantined in her castle

I’m quick to build a moat to keep intruders out

But I might let my bridge down if you showed up on my caller ID

Why do I want you permanently saved in my favorites?

If I sent you a text asking who’s by your side in the future

I would mask my disappointment when my name isn’t your reply

Can the fork in our frequencies transform into a figure eight

So I could stop dialing for once and connect with you face-to-face every now and then?

Because I’m not hanging up on you.

I will never hang up on you.

Your calls are never just another ringtone; they’re a once in a lifetime experience.

Brian Nguyen - Outta Time

I am a cinematic arts major and because of COVID it is difficult to go out and film with friends. So I created a fun fully cgi piece that helps me stay creative during these times. My Instagram is @nfxbrian

De'Andrea Harmon - Period of thought

This was my senior project I created to reflect the loss I felt as I prepared to graduate and was recovering from depression when quarantine first began and the things I was happy to still have in my life
